A starvation timer that keeps dungeon crawling from becoming perfect, boring caution.
A hunger clock drains a resource over time so players cannot safely grind, wait forever, or search every corner without cost. It is an old roguelike answer to degenerate optimal play.

Rogue, NetHack, ADOM, and many traditional roguelikes use food or hunger pressure to push players forward through dangerous spaces.
Why it matters
