Imposter syndrome in game development is the persistent feeling that you are not a 'real' developer, that your skills are inadequate, and that you will eventually be exposed as a fraud. It is rampant in the indie scene because the field is so broad -- you are constantly comparing your programming skills to dedicated programmers, your art to dedicated artists, and your design to dedicated designers. Social media makes it worse by showing polished highlights of other developers' work. The reality is that almost every developer, from hobbyists to industry veterans, experiences this. Shipped games are not made by people who feel confident -- they are made by people who feel like frauds and ship anyway.

Example

Even Rami Ismail, co-founder of Vlambeer and one of the most respected voices in indie development, has spoken publicly about experiencing imposter syndrome throughout his career. If someone who made Nuclear Throne and Ridiculous Fishing feels like a fraud sometimes, that feeling is clearly not connected to actual competence.

Why it matters

Imposter syndrome stops people from starting projects, sharing their work, applying to showcases, and releasing their games. Recognizing it as a nearly universal experience -- not a signal that you are actually inadequate -- is one of the most important mindset shifts an indie developer can make.
