The harsh reality that most indie games earn almost nothing.
For every Hollow Knight success story, thousands of indie games launch to crickets. The revenue distribution in indie gaming follows a brutal power law: a tiny percentage of titles capture the vast majority of sales, while the median indie game earns less than $5,000 lifetime. The explosion of game development tools means more games ship every year on Steam alone, roughly 14,000 in 2023, making discoverability the single biggest challenge. Marketing skill often matters more than game quality.
Example
Jeff Vogel of Spiderweb Software has written extensively about indie economics, noting that even established studios see declining per-title revenue. The developer of Dwarf Fortress lived near poverty for years before the Steam release finally brought financial stability after 20 years of development.
Why it matters
Romanticizing indie development without understanding the economics leads to heartbreak. If you want to go indie, you need a marketing plan as detailed as your game design document, because the best game nobody hears about is still a financial failure.
