Playdead spent six years following up Limbo with Inside, and the result was a masterclass in environmental storytelling. A boy runs through a dystopian world of mind-controlled humans, underwater horrors, and industrial nightmares. The animation is eerily lifelike, the puzzles are seamlessly integrated into the world, and the final act takes such a bizarre, body-horror turn that it dominated gaming discourse for weeks. Every element serves the atmosphere: no HUD, no dialogue, no tutorial prompts. Inside trusts its player completely and rewards that trust with one of gaming's most shocking conclusions.
