From PlayStation mascot platformers to Marvel's Spider-Man — Sony's most prolific first-party studio.
Founded in 1994 by Ted Price, Insomniac built the Spyro and Ratchet & Clank franchises across two decades of PlayStation hardware before being acquired by Sony in 2019 for $229M. The studio cracked open new revenue with Marvel's Spider-Man (2018, 20M+ copies), shipped Spider-Man: Miles Morales as a launch title for PS5 (2020), and followed with Spider-Man 2 (2023) and Wolverine (in development). Now ~500 people across two California offices.
Example
A late-2023 ransomware leak exposed Insomniac's internal roadmap through 2035, including unannounced X-Men, Venom, and Spider-Man 3 projects. The studio publicly confirmed the breach but kept shipping; the leaked schedule has held remarkably close to reality.
Why it matters
Insomniac is the modern proof that licensed-IP AAA games can be artistically and commercially first-class. Its Marvel deal — exclusive, multi-game, character-deep — became the model other publishers (EA-Disney, Rocksteady-DC) have tried to replicate.
