Co-founded id Software in 1991 and personally wrote the rendering engines for Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, and id Tech up through Rage. His work on adaptive tile refresh, BSP rendering, and the original first-person shooter pipeline literally invented modern 3D game technology. Left id in 2013 to become CTO of Oculus VR, drove the technical architecture of Oculus through the Facebook acquisition. Left Meta in 2022 frustrated with bureaucracy, now full-time on AGI research at his company Keen Technologies.

Example

Carmack open-sourced the Doom and Quake engines after their commercial life ended — an unusual move at the time and a defining gesture for game-engine open-source culture. His engines have spawned hundreds of community ports, from Doom on calculators to Quake on smartphones.

Carmack is arguably the most influential engineer in game history. His technical work shaped 3D rendering, his philosophical influence shaped open-source game culture, and his career arc from games to VR to AGI mirrors the technology industry's own focus over the last 30 years.
