Launch Window Strategy

Choosing when to release your game can matter as much as what is in it.

Launch window strategy is the art of timing a game's release to maximize visibility and sales while minimizing competition. The holiday season (October through December) generates the most sales but also has the most competition from AAA titles. January through March offers less competition but lower overall spending. Launching near a major competitor can be catastrophic for smaller titles. Publishers also coordinate around their own calendars, major gaming events, platform promotions, and cultural moments. The wrong window can doom a great game to obscurity.

Example

Titanfall 2 launched between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in October 2016 and suffered catastrophic sales despite critical acclaim. Conversely, Stardew Valley launched in February 2016 during a dry spell for new releases and became a massive hit. Elden Ring dominated February 2022 by launching when no other major title could compete.

Why it matters

Launch timing is one of the most impactful decisions a publisher makes, and one of the most underappreciated by players. It explains why some great games fail commercially and why publishers sometimes delay games not because they need more polish but because the competitive window shifted.
