The edutainment game where Luigi gets top billing because Mario being absent was somehow the gimmick.
Mario Is Missing! uses the Mario cast to smuggle geography quizzes, landmark trivia, and light exploration into a kid-friendly educational shell. It is remembered partly as a curio, partly as a meme, and partly because it gave Luigi rare protagonist oxygen before Nintendo properly knew what to do with him.
Example
Players wander through simplified global cities returning stolen monuments and answering location questions, which makes the whole game feel like a Nintendo-themed social studies worksheet.
Why it matters
It matters because it shows the strange places Mario's popularity carried the brand in the 1990s. It also foreshadows Luigi's later rise from palette swap to marketable lead.
