Metroid dropped Samus Aran onto the hostile planet Zebes with no map, no guidance, and a mounting sense of isolation. Players had to explore a sprawling interconnected world, finding upgrades like the Morph Ball and missiles that opened previously inaccessible areas. The atmosphere was oppressive and alien, drawing heavily from the films Alien and Aliens. The password system let players save progress, and the game rewarded fast completion times with different endings. Beating the game quickly enough revealed Samus without her helmet, then without her armor. The fastest completion showed her in a bikini, which was controversial by modern standards but revolutionary at the time for simply revealing that the powerful warrior players had been controlling was female. Metroid co-created the 'Metroidvania' subgenre alongside Castlevania, defining exploration-based progression through ability gating. Samus became one of gaming's first major female protagonists.
