Players built functioning computers inside a game about punching trees, and that is somehow not the most impressive thing they have done.
The Minecraft Redstone community is a subculture of players who use the game's redstone dust (essentially a wiring system) to build complex logic circuits, machines, and contraptions. What started as simple trap doors and hidden passages evolved into fully functional calculators, word processors, and even playable recreations of other games -- all built within Minecraft's block-based world. Redstone engineers have essentially turned a survival game into a visual programming environment. The community shares designs on YouTube and Reddit, pushing the boundaries of what is possible with each update that adds new redstone components.

Players have built working CPUs in Minecraft that can run basic programs. SethBling created a functioning Atari 2600 emulator using only command blocks and redstone. Mumbo Jumbo's YouTube channel, dedicated largely to redstone builds, has over 10 million subscribers. There are redstone recreations of Pac-Man, Snake, and even primitive 3D renderers.
Why it matters
The Redstone community proves that when you give players a system with enough depth, they will push it beyond anything you imagined. It has become an unintentional gateway to computer science and electrical engineering for millions of kids, teaching logic gates and circuit design through play.
