Mount Systems

The horse, dragon, or mechanical spider you ride through the open world and inevitably get emotionally attached to.

Mount systems solve the traversal problem in large open worlds while adding their own layer of gameplay. The best mounts feel like characters rather than vehicles. Red Dead Redemption 2's horses have individual temperaments, build trust over time, and can permanently die. Shadow of the Colossus's Agro is the emotional heart of the game despite being a horse. Elden Ring's Torrent enables a completely different combat style. Some games build entire progression systems around mounts: Guild Wars 2's mount mastery system gives each mount unique traversal abilities that transform world exploration.

Example

Roach in The Witcher 3 became a beloved meme precisely because the mount system was hilariously broken. Roach would spawn on rooftops, clip through terrain, and generally defy physics. It demonstrates how mount AI and pathfinding are surprisingly difficult technical challenges that can make or break the experience.

Why it matters

Mounts represent one of gaming's best examples of functional design becoming emotional design. A mount that starts as a movement speed buff becomes a companion players mourn when it dies. They also directly affect world design: mount-enabled games need wider paths, larger spaces, and different encounter designs than games on foot.
