Post
The Japanese console branch that translated roguelike punishment into charming dungeon expeditions.
Mystery Dungeon games use turn-based grid movement, procedural floors, item identification, and reset pressure, but often present them through friendlier characters and console RPG framing. They are roguelikes with a different cultural vocabulary.
Example
Torneko's Great Adventure, Shiren the Wanderer, Chocobo's Dungeon, and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon all belong to this lineage.
Why it matters
Mystery Dungeon matters because it carried roguelike structure to audiences that never cared about ASCII dungeon crawlers.
