The narrator character is a storytelling device where the game's narrator isn't just a neutral voice, they're a character with their own personality, agenda, and sometimes the ability to influence gameplay. The Stanley Parable's narrator reacts to player choices in real-time, arguing with you, mocking you, and desperately trying to keep the story on track. Bastion's narrator comments on the player's actions dynamically, creating a sense of being observed. Hades uses its narrator as both storyteller and character within the world. Some games make the narrator an unreliable antagonist whose version of events conflicts with what the player actually experiences.

Example

The Stanley Parable is entirely built around the narrator-player dynamic. The narrator describes what Stanley 'will' do, and the player can choose to obey or defy. Defiance leads to increasingly frustrated, creative, and surreal reactions from the narrator, who tries everything from manipulation to existential crisis to get the player back on script. The entire game is a meditation on free will in authored experiences.

Why it matters

The narrator character exploits a unique property of games: the player can disagree with the story being told. In a film, the narrator has absolute authority. In a game, the player can rebel, and that tension creates narrative possibilities that no other medium can achieve. It's one of the most 'games-only' storytelling techniques.
