He's on fire! Two-on-two basketball with no rules and all the dunks.
Midway's NBA Jam stripped basketball down to its most entertaining core: two-on-two, no fouls, turbo-powered dunks from half court, and players literally catching fire after three consecutive baskets. It was pure arcade spectacle with real NBA players and teams. The game's announcer, Tim Kitzrow, delivered iconic calls (Boomshakalaka! From downtown! He's heating up!) that became part of 1990s pop culture. NBA Jam ate quarters like no sports game before it and proved that sports games did not need to be simulations to be wildly successful.
Example
Lead developer Mark Turmell, a Detroit Pistons fan, secretly programmed the game so that the Chicago Bulls would miss last-second shots against the Pistons. This hidden bias was not revealed publicly for years.
Why it matters
NBA Jam redefined arcade sports games by prioritizing fun over realism. Its over-the-top style influenced every arcade sports title that followed and proved that accessibility and spectacle could coexist with licensed sports content.
