Using AI neural networks to generate or enhance game visuals, blurring the line between rendering and hallucination.
Neural rendering uses trained neural networks to generate, enhance, or accelerate visual output. NVIDIA's DLSS is the most commercially successful example: a neural network trained on thousands of game frames learns to upscale low-resolution renders to high resolution while adding detail that wasn't in the original image. Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) can reconstruct 3D scenes from photographs. Gaussian Splatting creates real-time renderable 3D scenes from video. Some researchers are exploring fully neural game renderers that replace the traditional rasterization pipeline entirely, generating frames from scene descriptions without conventional geometry processing.
Example
DLSS 3.5's Ray Reconstruction replaces hand-tuned denoising filters for ray-traced effects with a neural network that was trained on clean, fully ray-traced reference images. The neural network produces denoised output that's often better than the traditional approach because it 'understands' what clean lighting should look like rather than just blurring away noise. Google's Genie project demonstrated AI that can generate playable game environments from a single image.
Why it matters
Neural rendering is collapsing the cost of photorealism. Tasks that required armies of artists (asset creation, lighting) or massive GPU power (path tracing) can increasingly be handled by trained networks. It's the biggest paradigm shift in real-time graphics since programmable shaders, and it's only in its infancy.
