Ori and the Blind Forest by Moon Studios is a metroidvania platformer wrapped in one of the most visually stunning and emotionally devastating packages in gaming. The opening sequence, where Ori loses their adoptive parent, hits harder than most full-length films manage. The platforming is precise and fluid, with Ori gaining abilities that chain together into exhilarating movement combos. The escape sequences, where the environment collapses around you in real time, are breathtaking set pieces that demand perfection. The hand-painted art and Gareth Coker's orchestral score create something that feels more like an animated film you play.

The Ginso Tree escape sequence, where rising water chases you upward through a collapsing tree while the music swells and every jump has to be pixel-perfect. It is frequently cited as one of the greatest platforming sequences ever designed.
Why it matters
Ori proved that indie games could match or exceed AAA production values in specific areas. It demonstrated that emotional storytelling and tight gameplay are not mutually exclusive and helped legitimize Xbox as a platform for artistic indie titles.
