Overcooked by Ghost Town Games is a cooperative cooking game where you and up to three friends run a chaotic kitchen together. Chop ingredients, cook them, plate the dishes, serve customers, wash dishes, and do not let anything burn. Simple, right? Now do it on a kitchen split across two moving trucks. Or on an iceberg that cracks in half. Or in a haunted house where the layout changes every 30 seconds. The genius is that every task is trivially easy alone but coordinating four people doing simple tasks simultaneously creates glorious pandemonium. It sold millions and spawned a sequel that is somehow even more chaotic.
Example
The volcanic kitchen level where lava periodically cuts the room in half, stranding the person with the chopping board on one side and the stove on the other. The screaming that occurs when someone throws a tomato into the lava instead of across the gap is unforgettable.
Why it matters
Overcooked revitalized couch co-op gaming at a time when local multiplayer was considered dead. It proved that cooperative chaos is its own genre and that accessibility in design does not mean a lack of depth or challenge.
