Parry systems reward players who read enemy attacks and press a button within a tight timing window, deflecting incoming damage and usually creating a punish opportunity. The parry window's size defines the skill floor: generous windows (200+ milliseconds) feel accessible, while tight windows (under 100ms) create hardcore skill expression. The best parry systems make the risk-reward crystal clear -- miss the timing and you eat the full hit, nail it and the enemy staggers for massive damage. Some games make parrying optional but powerful, while others build entire combat systems around it.

Example

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice built its entire identity around parrying. The posture system means deflecting is more effective than dodging -- every perfect parry fills the enemy's posture bar toward a deathblow. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance has a parry that requires pushing toward the enemy while attacking, turning defense into aggression. Hades 2 added a parry-like 'omega' system that rewards timing with empowered counterattacks.

Why it matters

Parry mechanics create the highest-adrenaline moments in action games. That split second where you choose to stand your ground against a massive attack and nail the timing is pure gaming ecstasy. For devs, parry systems are a powerful tool for making players feel skillful without requiring complex inputs.
