Exclusivity is the oldest weapon in the console wars. Platform holders fund or acquire studios to create games you can only play on their hardware, making the game itself the reason to buy the console. Sony perfected this with PlayStation's first-party lineup, Microsoft responded by acquiring Activision Blizzard for $69 billion, and Nintendo has always lived or died by Mario and Zelda. The strategy is shifting as the economics increasingly favor multiplatform releases.

Example

Sony's decision to bring God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn to PC after years of PlayStation exclusivity marked a turning point. Microsoft went even further, making all Xbox exclusives available on PC from day one, effectively redefining what exclusivity means.

Why it matters

Exclusivity determines which hardware you need to buy and which communities you can join. As the industry moves toward multiplatform and subscription models, the traditional exclusive is becoming rarer, but the strategic thinking behind it still drives billions in acquisitions.
