Combat where breaking the enemy's composure matters more than shaving down their health bar.

Posture systems track balance, guard stability, or combat composure. They reward deflecting, pressuring, and preventing recovery, often turning defense into offense. Unlike simple stagger meters, posture usually exists on both player and enemy, making the whole fight a tug-of-war over momentum. The design goal is to make standing your ground feel active and dangerous rather than passive.

Example

Sekiro is the definitive posture-system game: perfect deflects damage enemy posture, hesitation lets it recover, and deathblows happen when posture breaks. Sifu uses structure in a similar way, where blocks, parries, and heavy hits push both sides toward a break. Lies of P borrows the idea with guard regain and perfect guards.

Why it matters

Posture systems rewrite action combat around nerve. They reward reading attacks, staying close, and maintaining pressure, creating fights that feel like duels instead of dodge-and-punish routines.
