Princess Zelda started as the classic fantasy royal in need of saving, but the series kept expanding her role until she became strategist, scholar, ninja alter ego, sage, pirate captain adjacent, and co-architect of Hyrule's fate. Different Zelda incarnations carry different temperaments, yet they all anchor the series' sense of memory and duty. She is one of the few characters in gaming whose name can overshadow the hero's in the public imagination.

Ocarina of Time turned Zelda into Sheik, Wind Waker reframed the royal myth through Tetra, and Tears of the Kingdom pushed her into the emotional center of the story. The franchise stopped treating her like furniture a long time ago.
