Horror that attacks perception first and only later remembers it can also kill you.
Psychological horror prioritizes dread, unreliability, disorientation, and emotional destabilization over direct monster pressure. It often works by making players mistrust the world, the protagonist, or the interface itself. The genre is less about jump scares than about contamination of meaning.
Example
Silent Hill 2, Doki Doki Literature Club, Omori, Layers of Fear, and many smaller experimental horror games all use psychological distortion as the main weapon.
Why it matters
Psychological horror shows how narrative framing, audiovisual design, and interface tricks can be as frightening as any combat encounter.
