Rather than updating textures, Capcom rebuilt RE2 from the ground up in the RE Engine. The fixed camera angles were replaced with over-the-shoulder perspective, movement was modernized, and Mr. X stalking players through the police station introduced a new horror gameplay vocabulary. It shipped with both Leon and Claire scenarios, critical acclaim, and a template Capcom would replicate with RE3, RE4, and future remakes.
