The science of when and how players get their treats -- and why variable timing is addictive.
Borrowed from behavioral psychology, reward scheduling determines the timing, frequency, and predictability of rewards. Fixed schedules (reward every 10 kills) feel reliable but get stale. Variable ratio schedules (random chance on every kill) create the slot-machine compulsion that keeps players grinding. The best games layer multiple reward schedules on top of each other -- short-term loot drops, medium-term level-ups, long-term story reveals -- so there's always something just around the corner pulling you forward.
Example
Diablo's loot system is basically a psychology textbook. Enemies drop loot on a variable ratio schedule, so every click could be the legendary item you've been hunting. Destiny 2 layers this even further with daily, weekly, and seasonal reward tracks that ensure there's always a carrot dangling no matter when you log in.
Why it matters
Reward scheduling is the difference between a game you play for 10 hours and one you play for 1,000. It's also where game design gets ethically murky -- the same principles that make games engaging also power predatory monetization. Understanding it makes you a smarter player and a more responsible designer.
