The co-founder of Sierra On-Line and designer of King's Quest — one of the very first commercially successful designers in PC gaming.
Co-founded Sierra On-Line in 1979 with husband Ken Williams, designed Mystery House (1980, the first graphical adventure game) and the King's Quest series (1984-1998), among others. Roberta Williams was one of the most prominent female designers in early PC gaming and one of the most commercially successful adventure-game designers ever. She retired from games in 1999 after Sierra's acquisition troubles, and returned in 2023 with a remake of Colossal Cave Adventure (3D rebuild of the original 1976 text adventure).
Example
King's Quest III (1986) had Roberta Williams as designer and writer, sold over 200,000 copies, and is one of the most influential adventure games ever made. Her work pioneered the puzzle/exploration adventure genre that defined PC gaming through the 1990s.
Why it matters
Roberta Williams is foundational to PC adventure gaming and one of the most important early designers in the medium. Her return in 2023 made her a generational link between the founding era of computer gaming and the modern indie scene.
