Before role queue, multiplayer games ended with five people locking DPS and nobody playing support. Role queue fixes that by making you pick your role during the queue itself, and the system only starts a match once it finds the right mix. The tradeoff is brutal queue times for popular roles and instant queues for unpopular ones.

Overwatch launched 2-2-2 role queue in 2019 after meta-compositions like GOATS broke pro play. League of Legends has had a soft role queue since 2016. Valorant intentionally skipped role queue because its agent roles blur the lines between duelist, controller, and sentinel.
Why it matters
Role queue shapes the experience for millions of players: queue times, balance, role identity, and even career viability for niche specialists. It is a structural choice that defines what kind of game a title actually becomes at scale.
