RPG Maker is a series of game development tools first released in Japan in 1992, with English releases starting in the late 1990s. RPG Maker is hyper-specialized for top-down 2D JRPGs — character sprites, tile-based maps, turn-based combat, and event-scripting are all built in. Notable RPG Maker games include To the Moon, OneShot, Yume Nikki, Off, OFF, Lisa, Omori, Witch's House, Ib, and many cult horror games. The series remains active (RPG Maker Unite released 2023) and is one of the longest-running game-creation toolchains.

Example

OMORI (2020) was developed by indie team OMOCAT over six years in RPG Maker MV. It sold over 1M copies on Steam in its first year and proved that RPG Maker games could compete commercially with custom-built indie RPGs.

Why it matters

RPG Maker is the engine that has democratized JRPG development for over 30 years. It is the foundation of an entire indie subculture — particularly Japanese horror and Western narrative experimental games — that wouldn't exist without it.
