Andrew and Paul Gower built RuneScape in Java, making it playable in any web browser without installation. This accessibility was its superpower: kids could play at school, at the library, or on the family computer without convincing anyone to buy software. The game featured a classless skill system where players leveled 23 individual skills (woodcutting, mining, cooking, magic, and more) independently. Its free-to-play model with optional membership created a sustainable business years before free-to-play became industry standard. At its peak, RuneScape had over 200 million registered accounts.

The Wilderness PvP zone created some of gaming's most dramatic player interactions. Luring trusting players into the Wilderness to kill them for their items was so common that 'getting lured' became a universal RuneScape experience. The phrase 'buying gf' spammed in chat became one of the game's most enduring inside jokes.
