Arcade shooting stripped to movement, target priority, and the ancient joy of screen-clearing violence.
Shoot 'em ups, or shmups, focus on survival through enemy waves, projectile management, and route knowledge. They can scroll vertically, horizontally, or lock to an arena, but they almost always value memorization, improvisation, and mechanical purity. Their best stages feel like music charts written in bullets.
Example
Gradius, R-Type, Raiden, Ikaruga, and DoDonPachi all capture different shades of the shmup tradition from harsh route memorization to stylized bullet spectacle.
Why it matters
Shmups are foundational arcade design. Their influence on boss patterns, score-chasing, and dodge-heavy combat is much bigger than their niche commercial footprint suggests.
