Spyro released as a direct answer to Crash Bandicoot's platforming crown, but carved its own identity: open 3D hub worlds, glide-based movement, and a more explorative feel than Crash's linear corridors. The original trilogy became PlayStation cornerstone titles. A 2018 Reignited Trilogy remaster returned the series to prominence, and the community still hopes for a true sequel.

Example

Spyro's 'charge and glide' movement was a joy to control. Stewart Copeland of The Police composed the original soundtrack. The 2018 Reignited Trilogy by Toys for Bob was a visual glow-up loved by fans. Spyro cameos in Crash Team Racing remain fan-service bait.

Why it matters

Spyro established that 3D platformers could combine mascot energy with real exploration. Its world design, glide physics, and mood influenced dozens of later mascot-platformer attempts and remains a touchstone for the genre's revival.
