Stagger meters track how close an enemy is to being stunned, broken, or knocked vulnerable. Unlike health, stagger usually decays, resets, or depends on specific damage types, which encourages players to maintain pressure rather than poke safely forever. Stagger systems make big enemies feel like puzzles: deal enough correct pressure, open the window, cash out damage before they recover.

Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy VII Remake both revolve around filling stagger gauges before unleashing burst damage. God of War uses stun meters to set up brutal finishers. Monster Hunter's knockdowns function similarly through accumulated part damage and status thresholds.
Why it matters
Stagger meters create combat punctuation. They give players a short-term objective beyond draining HP, reward aggression, and make boss fights feel more dynamic than steady damage races.
