The single most important number for indie developers before launch day.
Steam wishlists track how many users have marked a game to buy later, and this number has become the most critical pre-launch metric for indie games. Wishlists drive Steam's algorithm, which determines visibility on the storefront. More wishlists mean better placement in recommendations, higher visibility during sales events, and email notifications sent to every wishlister when the game launches or goes on sale. The conventional wisdom is that you need at least 7,000 to 10,000 wishlists at launch to have a shot at commercial viability, and conversion rates typically run around 15 to 20 percent in the first week.
Example
Hollow Knight: Silksong accumulated hundreds of thousands of wishlists before launch, virtually guaranteeing massive first-week sales. Meanwhile, countless indie developers share post-mortems about games that launched with under 2,000 wishlists and earned almost nothing regardless of quality. Steam Next Fest became the primary wishlist-building event for indies.
Why it matters
Steam wishlists are the indie developer's lifeline. They determine whether Steam's algorithm works for you or against you, and they provide the closest thing to a reliable pre-launch success predictor. Understanding the wishlist economy is essential for anyone trying to sell a game on PC.
