Still Wakes the Deep by The Chinese Room is a first-person horror game set on an oil rig in the North Sea during the 1970s. Something ancient is pulled up from beneath the ocean floor, and the rig's crew begins transforming into grotesque, fleshy amalgamations that still speak with the voices of the people they used to be. You play as Caz, an electrician with no combat abilities, navigating the collapsing rig while avoiding creatures that were your friends hours ago. The Scottish voice acting is phenomenal, the environmental storytelling is dense, and the body horror is among the most disturbing in recent gaming. The rig itself is a character, creaking and buckling as the entity consumes it.

Example

Encountering a transformed crewmate who still recognizes you and begs for help in a distorted version of their voice while their body splits and reforms into something inhuman. The game refuses to let you forget these were people.

Why it matters

Still Wakes the Deep proved The Chinese Room could deliver horror as effectively as they deliver emotional narratives. Its grounded setting and working-class characters brought a rare authenticity to the horror genre that elevated it beyond typical monster game fare.
