A stinger is a brief musical phrase (typically 1-5 seconds) triggered by a specific game event. Finding a secret item plays a sparkling arpeggio. Dying triggers a somber descending phrase. Completing an objective gets a triumphant brass hit. Stingers work alongside the main adaptive music system but override or blend with it momentarily to mark significant moments. The challenge is making stingers feel satisfying in any musical context -- they need to land well regardless of what the background music is doing when they fire. Good stinger systems quantize their triggers to the nearest beat so they never feel rhythmically off.

The Legend of Zelda's discovery jingle when you open a chest is one of gaming's most iconic stingers -- it's been virtually unchanged for decades because it's perfect. Final Fantasy's victory fanfare after every battle is a stinger so legendary it has its own concert arrangements.
Why it matters
Stingers provide instant musical feedback that reinforces player actions. They turn game moments into mini-ceremonies, making achievements feel earned and failures feel weighty. A game without stingers feels flat; a game with great ones feels like it's celebrating alongside you.
