Super Mario Bros. 2 is the famous reskin of Doki Doki Panic, and that alternate origin is exactly why it feels so strange. Picking up enemies, choosing between four playable characters, and moving through dreamlike vertical stages gave Mario a one-off energy that never fully disappeared from the franchise afterward.
