Nintendo looked at kart racing, added banana peels and shell warfare, and accidentally created a forever-series.
Super Mario Kart took Mode 7 tech, lightweight character archetypes, and a dirty sense of humor about competition and fused them into the blueprint for an entire subgenre. The racing is tight, but the real magic is the item chaos that keeps skill and sabotage in permanent tension.
Example
Battle Mode on the SNES did almost as much for couch multiplayer culture as Grand Prix did for racing design. Pop balloons, ruin friendships, repeat.
Why it matters
It matters because kart racing as people actually understand it starts here. Every blue shell complaint traces back to Nintendo deciding racing should also be a prank war.
