Founded in 2009 by ex-EA producers Amir Rao and Gavin Simon in Rao's father's house, Supergiant has shipped five games in 16 years — Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, Hades, Hades II — without ever taking publisher funding or growing beyond ~20 staff. Each game is built around composer Darren Korb's score and writer Greg Kasavin's economical prose. Hades (2020) won the BAFTA Best Game and was the first video game to win a Hugo Award.

Hades shipped to Early Access in December 2018 with a single biome and grew over 21 months of public iteration before its 1.0 launch. The team published every single design change in a weekly devlog — making the development process itself a marketing channel.
