The cost-benefit calculation teams run before every fight, weighing gold, map pressure, and respawn timers.
Good teams do not fight because a fight showed up. They fight when they can extract a positive trade: kills, objectives, or forcing enemies off farm. Teamfight economy is the mental accounting behind this. Winning a fight while losing three waves plus a tower is often a net loss.
Example
In Dota 2, pro teams will famously decline a clean 5v5 fight because killing two heroes means losing a tower and Roshan. Damwon's 2020 Worlds run was built on disciplined fight selection, ignoring bait engagements when the map trade was unfavorable.
Why it matters
Most players at all levels fight too often. Learning to read teamfight economy is the single biggest macro improvement amateur players can make, and it is the invisible layer pros reference in post-match interviews.
