The best-of-five series format that separates deep contenders from one-hit wonders.
A Bo5 rewards adaptation. A team can lose game one, reverse-sweep by picking apart the opponent's draft tendencies, and win the series. That is why grand finals are almost never Bo1. Bo5s also create narrative arcs within a single series: momentum shifts, counter-strategies, and mental warfare playing out across hours.
Example
The 2018 LoL Worlds finals (IG vs Fnatic) ended 3-0 but still demonstrated draft depth. Dota 2's The International uses Bo5 grand finals, and OG's back-to-back Bo5 reverse sweeps in 2019 are considered some of the greatest series ever played.
Why it matters
Bo5 dynamics introduce a meta-game between games: banning adjustments, sideboard thinking, psychological pressure. It is why single-elimination Bo1 upsets feel like flukes but Bo5 upsets feel earned.
