A Skyrim mod so good it became its own standalone game and won a Writers Guild Award.
The Forgotten City by Modern Storyteller started as one of the most downloaded Skyrim mods ever, then grew into a standalone game set in an ancient Roman city trapped in a time loop. The premise: if any one person in the city commits a sin, everyone dies, turned to gold by the Golden Rule. You have to figure out who is about to break the rule and stop them before the cycle resets. Each loop, you retain knowledge from previous runs, opening new dialogue options and solutions. The writing is exceptional, tackling philosophy, morality, and Roman history with genuine intelligence.

Discovering that you can exploit the time loop by giving items to NPCs, letting the loop reset, then finding those items still in place because they existed in the past. The game rewards creative thinking about the implications of its own mechanics.
Why it matters
The Forgotten City is one of the most successful mod-to-standalone transitions in gaming history. It proved that strong writing and clever time-loop design can compensate for a modest budget and small team.
