Meta stands for 'most effective tactics available,' though it originally just meant the game about the game. It represents the collective wisdom of the playerbase about what works best right now. The meta shifts constantly as players discover new strategies, developers release patches, and counter-strategies emerge. Understanding the meta means knowing which characters, weapons, or builds are currently strongest and why, giving you a framework to either follow the crowd or deliberately counter it.
Example
In League of Legends, the meta frequently shifts between tank-heavy compositions and burst-damage comps depending on item and champion changes. When Riot buffed assassin items in Season 13, the meta swung hard toward pick-based compositions, and teams like T1 adapted their drafts overnight.
Why it matters
Playing without understanding the meta is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Even if you choose to go off-meta, knowing what everyone else is doing lets you make that choice strategically rather than blindly.
