Will Wright's The Sims let players create virtual people and manage their daily lives: building houses, pursuing careers, forming relationships, and handling basic needs like hunger and hygiene. There was no win condition, no score, no final boss. Players made their own stories, whether wholesome family dramas or elaborate torture chambers where Sims were locked in rooms without doors. The game attracted a massive audience that traditional games never reached, particularly women who represented over 60% of the player base. It sold over 16 million copies and spawned an expansion pack empire.

Example

Removing the pool ladder while a Sim was swimming became the game's most iconic dark comedy moment. The Sim would swim until exhausted, then drown because they could not climb out. Players discovered this immediately and it became one of gaming's most universally shared guilty pleasures.

Why it matters

The Sims proved that games did not need conflict, violence, or competition to be massively successful. It opened gaming to demographics that the industry had largely ignored and demonstrated that player-created narratives could be more compelling than scripted ones. Its expansion pack model also pioneered modern DLC strategy.
