Neversoft's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 refined everything the first game did right and added the manual, a simple balance trick that connected combos and fundamentally changed how the game was played. Scores that were impressive in THPS1 became trivial in the sequel because you could chain tricks across entire levels. The soundtrack (Rage Against the Machine, Bad Religion, Millencolin) defined a generation's taste in music. The create-a-park and create-a-skater modes added enormous replay value. It received universal perfect scores and is still considered one of the greatest games ever made.
Example
The manual trick (a wheelie between grinds and aerials) was THPS2's secret weapon. It turned the entire level into one continuous combo opportunity, and high-score competitions exploded as players chained million-point runs across entire stages.
Why it matters
THPS2 set the gold standard for extreme sports games and introduced millions of kids to punk rock and skateboarding culture. Its influence on both gaming and youth culture in the early 2000s is hard to overstate.
