Fifty complete games in one package, each good enough to have been someone's favorite NES cartridge.
UFO 50 by Mossmouth (Derek Yu of Spelunky fame) is an anthology of 50 original games presented as the fictional output of a 1980s game studio called UFO Soft. Each game is a fully realized experience with its own mechanics, progression, and identity, ranging from platformers and RPGs to puzzle games and shmups. They are presented in chronological order, showing the fictional studio's evolution over a decade. Many of the 50 games would be standout releases on their own; the fact that they are bundled together is almost absurdly generous. Hidden connections between games reward players who explore the full collection, and a meta-narrative threads through the entire anthology.
Example
Discovering that a character who appears as a minor NPC in game 12 is actually the protagonist of game 37, and their backstory only makes sense if you played both. The interconnections between the 50 games reward completionists with a depth most single games never achieve.
Why it matters
UFO 50 challenged the assumption that games need to be singular experiences. It proved that a curated anthology can tell a story through game design itself and set a new standard for what 'value for money' means in indie gaming.
