Warcraft III blended traditional RTS gameplay with RPG hero units, creating something that felt genuinely new in 2002. The four-race campaign told a surprisingly compelling story featuring Arthas's fall from grace, but the real magic was the World Editor. Blizzard shipped one of the most powerful modding tools ever bundled with a game, and the community ran wild with it. Tower defense games, RPG maps, and most famously Defense of the Ancients all emerged from Warcraft III custom games. The modding scene it spawned was arguably more influential than the game itself.

Example

Arthas purging the city of Stratholme remains one of the most memorable moral moments in RTS history. The player has no choice but to follow through, and that helplessness made the storytelling land harder than any cutscene could.

Why it matters

Without Warcraft III's World Editor, there is no DotA, no League of Legends, no Dota 2, and arguably no MOBA genre at all. One game's modding tools reshaped the entire competitive gaming landscape for decades.
