Weapon recoil is the upward, sideways, or patterned movement applied to aim when a weapon fires. It can be visual, mechanical, or both: camera shake sells impact, while actual aim displacement demands correction. Good recoil makes weapons feel distinct and rewards burst control, counter-pull skill, and positioning. Bad recoil is either meaningless decoration or random chaos that makes shots feel unfair.
Example
Counter-Strike built an entire skill ceiling around learnable spray patterns. Valorant inherited that lineage but adds controlled randomness after early bullets, pushing players toward taps and bursts. PUBG's heavy recoil helped define its tactical pacing, where full-auto at range is a learned skill rather than a default setting.
Why it matters
Recoil is one of the main reasons guns in shooters feel different. It shapes time-to-kill, range balance, skill expression, and the fantasy of each weapon, from laser-stable SMGs to hand cannons that punch like thunder.
